Every Exert Ability Worth Playing With the Dumbo Coconut

Analysis date Aug 23, 2026

The Dumbo coconut reads: you may use the {E} abilities of your characters the turn they’re played. Normally a freshly played character spends a turn drying and can’t use abilities that require exerting, so this coconut is a permanent haste effect for utility. That makes one question worth answering properly: which exert abilities in the pool actually get better when they fire the turn the character lands?

We answered it by parsing the full card pool (sets 1 through 13) and pulling every character whose rules text contains the exert symbol. That returned 70 characters. Seven of them are not activated abilities at all, three are auras that grant exert abilities to other characters, three are restrictions like “can’t {E} to sing songs”, and one exerts an item rather than the character itself, all covered in the edge cases at the end. The remaining 63 are the census. Items are excluded on purpose: items have no drying rule in regular Lorcana, so they already activate the turn they’re played and the coconut adds nothing to them. Alert is also not Evasive, it only challenges as if it were, which matters for the named card’s aura. Everything below reflects card texts as of Aug 23, 2026. One caveat on the ink columns: our card database files each card under a single ink, so dual-ink cards appear under one of their two inks only (Lena Sabrewing — Pure Energy, for example, is Amethyst/Steel). Check ink identity in a deckbuilder before locking a list.

How we graded

Each ability got a lane: Auto-include if it earns a slot in almost any deck of its ink, Build-dependent if it needs the right shell or table, and Trap if it looks better with the coconut than it plays. The grading weighs five things: what the immediate activation actually buys (that is the coconut’s whole contribution), whether the effect repeats, how it scales against three opponents instead of one, whether the ability carries an ink cost on top of the exert (the Dumbo deck budgets about 1 ink per activation), and whether the body is Evasive or reaches 2 lore, since Evasive bodies double as batteries for the named card’s aura.

Top 10 with the coconut, math shown

Bridging from the tables to a ranking: what follows weighs the immediate activation the coconut buys, how the effect scales against three opponents, and the cost of repeating it.

  1. Mickey Mouse — Trumpeter (Steel 4). Exert plus 2 ink plays any character from your hand for free. Without the coconut he is a 0/1 that must survive a full table rotation before doing anything. With it, turn 4 on 6 ink is Trumpeter plus your best character in play immediately. Play a 6-drop and the turn produced 10 ink of material for 6 spent, and it repeats every turn he lives. The 1 willpower is the tax, since any stray ping answers him.
  2. The Queen — Jealous Beauty (Amethyst 4). 3 lore per activation, 4 if a Princess is among the cards, mined from any opponent’s discard. The race ends at 25, so a single activation covers 12 to 16 percent of it, and four activations across a game are 12 to 16 lore from one card.
  3. Madam Mim — Rival of Merlin (Amethyst 5). A free character costing 4 or less with Rush, the turn she enters and every turn after. Each activation is roughly 4 ink of material, spent as removal or as a second enter-play trigger.
  4. Lady Tremaine — Bitterly Jealous (Emerald 6). A bounce plus each opponent discarding at random. The discard reads as one card in a duel and three cards at a full table, repeatable, which makes her the census’s best each-opponent effect.
  5. Yzma — Conniving Chemist (Amethyst 4). Draw until you hold 3. After a turn that emptied your hand, the activation is worth 2 to 3 cards, immediately and again every turn.
  6. The Queen — Diviner (Sapphire 3). Look at 4, install an item costing 3 or less for free. In our Dumbo list with 7 such items in 60 cards, a full-deck look finds one about 46 percent of the time (1 minus C(43,4)/C(50,4)), and the rate climbs as the deck thins. On a hit, a 3-drop produced a body and an item in one turn.
  7. The Queen — Wicked and Vain (Amethyst 5). A card per turn on a 4/5 body, no condition, no extra cost, from the turn she lands.
  8. Alice — Tea Alchemist (Amethyst 6). Exert a character and every copy of its name. Every deck in this format runs up to 4 copies of its named card, so one activation against a board holding 2 or 3 of them freezes the leader’s whole engine for a turn.
  9. Bruno Madrigal — Undetected Uncle (Amethyst 4). With the top of your deck known through a scry effect, naming it is 3 lore plus the card, the turn he enters, on an Evasive body that keeps working afterward. Blind, the hit rate is close to zero, so he is only this high with the support.
  10. Prince John — Gold Lover (Sapphire 4). A free item costing 5 or less from hand or discard, entering exerted. Installing a 4-cost tax item for free the turn he lands returns his own cost within one rotation of the table.

Honorable mentions: Elsa — Snow Queen and Hydros — Ice Titan for the cheapest repeatable tap-down in the pool, Triton — Discerning King for turning spent items into 3 lore a turn, Launchpad — Trusty Sidekick and Tinker Bell — Tiny Tactician for looting that runs from turn 2, and Goofy — Klutzy Skier with Namaari — Nemesis, which the coconut converts into removal actions with a temporary body attached, a mode they simply do not have in regular play.

Edge cases, briefly

A few cards carry the exert symbol without being activated character abilities, and two of them matter for rulings. Auras that grant exert abilities to others (Donald Duck — Coin Collector, Cogsworth — Talking Clock, Aladdin — Barreling Through, and Dumbo’s own MAKING HISTORY): the granted ability belongs to the receiving character, so our reading is the coconut applies to it. Restrictions (“can’t {E} to sing songs” on Ariel — On Human Legs, Dopey — Drawn to Music, Ulf — Mime) are not abilities at all. Aurora — Lore Guardian exerts one of your items as the cost, not herself, so she already works the turn she is played under normal rules, no coconut needed. And singing itself is, in our reading, a game action rather than a character’s {E} ability, so the coconut does not let fresh characters sing. That last one is the ruling to settle with your table before anything else, because a table that reads it the other way has a very different format.

The deck we built around this

The census is the map; the deck tech is the route. Our Amethyst/Sapphire/Emerald Dumbo list runs the named card’s Evasive aura as a draw-and-lore engine, funds roughly one activation per turn per battery with Sapphire’s ramp, and takes its interaction almost entirely from this census’s Auto-include column: Elsa — Snow Queen, Yzma — Conniving Chemist, The Queen — Jealous Beauty, Madam Mim — Rival of Merlin, Alice — Tea Alchemist, Kida — Creative Thinker, plus Emerald’s two standouts, Wildcat — Mechanic as a battery that banishes items and Lady Tremaine — Bitterly Jealous as the repeatable three-way discard. The Emerald slot itself came from a simple deckbuilding test this census enables: ink in Lorcana is generic, so a third ink is justified the moment any of its cards beats the worst card in your sixty, and Emerald cleared that bar six times. The full 60, the curve, the ink budget per turn and the 4-player game plan are in the Dumbo deck tech published alongside this guide.

What did we miss?

The parse found 70 characters and we graded 63 abilities by hand, but grading is judgment and tables full of real opponents outvote spreadsheets. If your pod has made Nero — Fearsome Crocodile work, or found the Trumpeter shell we have not tested yet, we want to hear it. Analysis dated Aug 23, 2026, against the card texts and coconut texts in the app on that date. Corrections welcome.
